Goodbye to All That

A person gets to be almost 54 years old, he has no use for “That’s How You Like It” or “Naughty Girl” or “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” or (good gracious) “F__ Love,” which features this timeless refrain:

F___ love, give me diamonds (4x)
I’m already in love with myself
So in love with myself
I’m already in love with myself
F__ love, give me diamonds

My brother put me onto this guy, Chris Smither. He’s been around the block a few times. Seventy years on the planet, fifty years of making music. Craggy and deliberate and wise: more my speed these days.

Listen for “They left you to find your way / through your life alone,” “Tomorrow’s just your grand plan / for yesterday,” “All you get is today / try to see it that way,” my favorite, “Don’t try to explain / try not to complain / no one really cares,” and the title line, “Don’t try to find / your place in line, / ’cause it’s everywhere.”
